We are seeking a Technical Standards Specialist to help establish and improve the procedures, work instructions, and documentation that support complex capital projects. This position will collaborate with engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, project controls, maintenance, and operations teams to turn technical knowledge into practical, easy-to-follow standards.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical writing skills with a working understanding of how industrial projects move from design and construction through commissioning, startup, and final handover. This role is well suited to someone who can gather information from subject-matter experts, identify inconsistencies, and develop documentation that improves safety, quality, efficiency, and repeatability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, revise, and maintain standard operating procedures, work instructions, process guides, and other controlled technical documents.
  • Create documentation that supports the full capital-project lifecycle, including engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, turnover, and closeout.
  • Interview engineers, construction leaders, commissioning personnel, project controls professionals, maintenance teams, and other subject-matter experts to accurately capture technical processes.
  • Translate complex workflows and technical information into clear, structured, and actionable content for a range of users.
  • Establish consistent document templates, formatting conventions, approval workflows, governance practices, and revision-control requirements.
  • Review existing documentation to identify gaps, conflicting information, outdated content, and opportunities for standardization.
  • Confirm that procedures align with internal expectations, applicable safety requirements, regulatory obligations, and accepted industry practices.
  • Incorporate lessons learned, field observations, project reviews, and performance data into updated procedures and standards.
  • Coordinate document reviews and approvals with stakeholders across multiple departments.
  • Conduct periodic audits to ensure documentation remains accurate, current, accessible, and properly controlled.
  • Assist with the development of onboarding resources and training materials based on approved procedures.
  • Promote consistent project-execution practices across multiple teams, facilities, and large-scale initiatives.
  • Support continuous-improvement efforts by refining standards as project and operational needs evolve.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, a technical discipline, or a related field; equivalent directly relevant experience may also be considered.
  • At least seven years of experience supporting industrial manufacturing, engineering, construction, operations, or capital-project environments.
  • Demonstrated experience developing technical procedures, SOPs, work instructions, process documentation, or operational standards.
  • Practical understanding of capital-project execution, including engineering, construction, commissioning, startup, and turnover activities.
  • Ability to understand complex technical processes and communicate them in concise, user-friendly language.
  • Strong interviewing and information-gathering skills, with the ability to draw accurate process details from subject-matter experts.
  • Experience coordinating input, reviews, and approvals across multiple functions and levels of an organization.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and document quality.
  • Ability to manage multiple documentation priorities while maintaining consistency and accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within energy, chemicals, mining, advanced manufacturing, or another heavy-industrial sector.
  • Professional background in commissioning, construction management, project controls, engineering, maintenance, or plant operations.
  • Familiarity with document-management platforms, controlled-document workflows, and formal revision practices.
  • Knowledge of ISO-based management systems, project-management frameworks, quality programs, or similar standards.
  • Experience supporting major capital programs or multiple concurrent industrial projects.
  • Experience creating process maps, checklists, templates, training content, or other tools that support procedure adoption.
  • Comfortable working directly with both office-based teams and personnel in active industrial or project environments.
